Hyland https://www.benshyland.com/ "Derek’s daily -and quiet commute gets disturbed by an extremely annoying woman speaking on the phone way too loud. In writer/director Ben S. Hyland’s sharp comedy Quiet Carriage, a young man finds himself in a situation we have all experienced, and have most likely all stayed passive in while boiling up inside. Will Derek speak up for himself?… for all of us! The inspiration behind Quiet Carriage comes as no surprise, Hyland experienced the same inconvenience he forces on his main character, followed by the frustration of not knowing what to do that we all know too well. Basing his film on such a mundane event surely makes the film extremely relatable to most but what deepens the audience’s engagement is that it is rarely something we experience alone. When someone is super loud in public transportation, more than one person usually notices which leads to eye contacts between strangers seeking validation for their annoyance. So not only do we understand Derek’s predicament, it is almost as if we were in the train with him, looking to him to do the one thing we all wish we could do in this situation! Hyland takes this fun premise to the next level by subverting the audience’s expectations and more than once. The escalation that ensues is extremely entertaining, witty and delightful. Hyland’s sharp screenplay is brought to the screen by the performances of the two lead actors Amit Shah and Emma Sidi, magnified by the comedic timing of the editing that keeps us on our toes. Shah captures the escalation mixing the nonchalance and growing frustration of his character while Sidi remains on that fine line of pushing it without ever doing too much, her detachment is hilarious and dare I say disrespectful. I especially want to give a shout out to the yellow coat Sidi wears, it contributed so much to my appreciation and enjoyment of the film. Hyland wraps the film quite neatly, surprising us once more with one last joke and twist that sends the audience off on the perfect note. Fresh off its festival run with notable stops at Aspen ShortsFest or Encounters, we are happy to host Quiet Carriage’s online debut. Hyland is teaming up again with Quiet Carriage producer Adam Smith on his new short film Talk Radio that is currently on the festival circuit, while also working on a series of short comedy sketches and a TV show called Sex After Marriage." - S/W Curator Céline Roustan Cast: Amit Shah and Emma Sidi.
